Friends, last Friday few short hours’ drive south of me, in the early morning hours, an unimaginable torrent of water swept through several communities. It came without warning and at such frightening speed that most of the people inhabiting the banks of the Guadalupe River had no chance of survival. Most accounts indicate that the river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes. Well over 100 people perished and well over 100 more are still missing (let’s presume they did not survive).
When God allows us to witness such terrible things, there is a purpose. How many of us could say, truly, that if the waters rose or the house caught fire or the earth opened up and swallowed our homes right this minute, we would be prepared to face Christ the Judge?
Go to confession!
Repent and practice virtue!
Cling to Our Lord and His Blessed Mother!
About the most heartwarming story to emerge from this disaster is that of the two young sisters who’s bodies were found together. They were holding hands and clutching their rosaries. Thank God their parents taught them that. May they (and all the faithful departed) rest in peace.
But go to confession!
