The Brandy Manhattan

If Ann Barnhardt can occasionally drop a food post, why not me?

Today, January 17th, marks seven years since my dad went to his judgment. I pray for his soul daily at Mass. He taught me to go every day.

He was a man of great style and good taste. He did not often drink; but when he did, he would order one of these:

This was served to me at a bar at BWI Airport once. Points for getting the mix right. Loss of points for the lack of proper glass.

That, my friends, is a Brandy Manhattan. Dad used to tell me that the brandy made it much smoother (as opposed to a plain old Manhattan made with rye or other whisky). He was right, as usual.

It’s really simple, too.

3 parts brandy

1 part sweet vermouth

Dash of angostura bitters

Cherry to garnish

Shake over ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

By the way, it helps if that cherry garnish is speared by a plastic cocktail sword and you have a five year-old son who thinks it’s really neat that Daddy handed him one of the swords and challenged him to a micro-duel at the table in the fancy restaurant.

Many Prayers for Many People

Before I drift off to sleep tonight, I am remembering to offer prayers for several friends and family members who are in need.

In your charity I ask you to offer a few as well.

In particular, the mother of a friend is in her final agony.

Also, let us not forget the dead: Fr. James Buckley, Supernerd’s mother, and all the deceased of our own families.

Finally, pray for my family and for me, please. All prayers are greatly appreciated.

Finally finally, offer an Ave for the soul most forgotten in purgatory by the human race

Thank you and God bless you all!

Since it’s a little chilly where I am, I think I’ll bundle up and listen to a good podcast…

In case the embed doesn’t actually show up (the devil would love that), here’s the link.

That Looks Awfully Like a House (Another Reason to Homeschool)

I just about died laughing as I saw the following.

Heres the link to the print article of the same.

I llove the fanciful edu-terms like “invested in their legacy” and “disconnect from daily challenges” and “academics” (as if anything of real value is now or has been taught in any brick and mortar school in a long time.

And I’m sorry (not) but did you catch the line about kids who need to be sent away to “alternative school environments” for varying offenses? In many cases, those offenses would merit time in jail were it not for the age of the offender.

You want a real reset for your kids?

Check around your house. I’m pretty sure you have a kitchen, dining room table, living room, and maybe even a patio or your own

And if you’re still not convinced that you can teach your kids yourself, perhaps another video I came across from the same school district will help you realize that you really can’t not homeschool theses days.

The only person bringing hellfire on my kids will be me, thank you very much.

Light Eternal

Supernerd’s mother died.

Please pray for the eternal repose of her soul. Her son and his family are also in my prayers.

Ave Maria…

Been to Confession Lately?

St. Louis Catholic sums it up precisely. Only evil can come of this.

To Forgive is Divine

Yesterday I shared with you the events of my day – that I had been in a courtroom while a friend of mine spoke to his son’s killer and forgave him and offered him a rosary. It was a draining day for me with a ten hour round trip drive. But it was so much more for my friend.

Friends, being there and witnessing that moment was one of the most gut-wrenching and also beautiful moments of my life. I want to share the actual video of the victim impact statement with you now. It’s 20 minutes long. Please watch the whole thing. But if you are short on time, skip to the 19:00 mark.

After we left the courthouse, we walked across the street to the cathedral church for San Antonio. I hate to divulge the private moments of another person in prayer but I have to tell you that my friend knelt before Our Lord in the tabernacle and hung his head and cried.

Pray for this dear man and his family and for the repose of his son. And pray for the felon.

And STAY CONFESSED.

By all means, please copy the link to the video and share with your friends.
