Sun and Moon, Bless the Lord!

I’m not the greatest photog out there but this shot captured with an iPhone 12 (covered the lens with my eclipse glasses) really struck me.

I took this on my front lawn in Texas just as the moon was starting to take a bite out of the sun and it almost looks like a cross is emanating from the disc, almost like a monstrance…

God is marvelous to us, His sinful people.

Let us heed this as the warning to repent I am sure it is.

On that note, I stopped in at confession this morning. Asked my guardian angel and the Blessed Mother to help me make a good confession. I stepped into the box and started speaking the few things I had planned. And then, almost without realizing it, I concluded with, “and for all of my previous sins including…” where I went on to list about 20 things from my past. Wasn’t planning to make a general confession today but I’m glad I did.

And then I went home and witnessed the eclipse. Roosters crowed at 1:40 PM. The porch light came on. Birds flew into the trees for shelter. My dog, well he slept right through it but that’s to be expected. My mother-in-law stopped by with tacos for everyone because why not? At the moment of totality, the public school kids are few blocks away let out a loud cheer. My neighbors began applauding. And I stared at the sun without the glasses and I was fine and it was beautiful. I saw Jupiter and Venus clear as day. And of course I heard the celebratory shotgun blast from somewhere in the neighborhood because this is Texas after all.

And then when it was over we all stopped and offered a few Aves in honor of Blessed Mother and to thank God for this once-in-a-lifetime gift.

Sun and moon, bless the Lord!

One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen!

Mom’s Turn

Two days ago it was my late father’s 88th birthday.

Well, one year and two day later, my dear Mom made her debut. She’s still very much with us, by the way.

In your charity please offer a prayer for her on this her 87th birthday.

Photo of St. Rita statue from St. Monica’s Catholic Church, Philadelphia, courtesy Andrew Dunn. As a young girl, my mother took St. Rita as her confirmation saint without any knowledge that this would be the start of our family’s (and mine in particular) devotion to the saint of the impossible.

In Case Things Go South (Ever)…

A friend sent me a tweet. In deference to him I will simply quote it. He doesn’t want the credit. I appreciate that. But I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. So here goes…

“If I’ve never said this before let me say it now: I give the unlimited and irrevocable power of agency to anyone, anywhere to offer prayers and spiritual sacrifices for my soul and the souls of my wife and children. (And thank you in advance to anyone who uses this authority!)”

Please use this wisely and please also consider authorizing others to pray on your behalf.

Bonus Post 4/8/24: Happy Birthday, Daddy!

On this day in 1936 my father was born. In your charity, please offer a prayer for the repose of his soul. He was particularly devoted to daily Mass and to the rosary. Shouldn’t we all be? These two things (along with how to tie both my shoes and a necktie) were the most important lessons he passed on to me, the youngest of his 8 sons. He also had 8 daughters. He used to say, “Some men invest in retirement accounts. I invested in children.”

In his honor I will have a brandy Manhattan or two tonight.

And I can still smell his Prince Albert pipe tobacco wafting in the air.

Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary, pray for us!

First Saturday of April 2024

https://fatima.org/first-saturday-devotion/

I always suggest doing the five First Saturdays to all who have not engaged this beautiful devotion before. Blessed Mother gave us this through Sr. Lucia for a good reason. It is for our time. Although I (uncharacteristically) missed Mass today, I have completed the First Saturdays many times in the past.

Things to consider…

  • It is always a good idea to confess one’s sins (and yes, even past sins).
  • We never know how much time any of us has on this earth. Don’t delay a practice that takes five months to complete. Start now.

I wish you all a blessed Saturday and weekend! It appears the eclipse (I’m in the direct path of totality) may actually be visible as it looks like the cloud cover might part in time. And then we’re supposed to get slammed with “gorilla hail and tornadoes” according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Man, it’s hard not to be let your mind wander toward conspiracies when there are just so many coincidences. Tack on an LOL after that in your mind.

Our Lady of Good Counsel, Ora pro nobis!

I’ll Take “Things That Should Not Be Happening” for $100

Let’s recap…

  • Total eclipse
  • Jonah
  • Nineveh
  • Annunciation
  • Earthquake in my native New Jersey (near a town called Lebanon)

Are you “shook”? No need to go nuts or anything but just because it’s salutary and all that, why not…
